One Thing You Must Know Before Playing in the Water

💡 About this story —
Playing in rivers and lakes is so cool and exciting!
But water can be just as tricky as it is fun.
Wearing a life jacket, warming up, staying out of deep water, and going with an adult — Didi and Banggu learn these water safety rules one by one in WAGZAK JUMP.

A floating mountain on the river?!

Didi and Banggu spreading out a map and pointing at a mountain that seems to float on the lake

"Didi, I heard there's a huge mountain floating on the water in Chungcheongbuk-do!"

Banggu shook a yellow balloon and said it all excited.

What?! How can a mountain float on water?!

Even a tiny pebble sinks right to the bottom.

I just couldn't hold back, so Banggu and I looked it up in WAGZAK JUMP.

And right there — a lesson called "Let's Play in the River!"

A whole lake appeared right in the middle of my room

Didi watching an AR lake and green mountains appear in the middle of the room, with Juho and Cheongho waving

I pressed the button and a giant blue lake spread out right in the middle of my room.

Green mountains surrounded the lake on all sides, and sunlight sparkled on the water.

Then two friends popped up and said hello.

"Hi, I'm Juho!" "Hi, I'm Cheongho. Nice to meet you!"

Juho stretched out his hand and said,

"Let's go find out what fun things to do in Chungcheongbuk-do!"

Then a bunch of exciting activities spread out over the lake.

"Pick what you want to do. Here we go!"

An AR four-seasons screen showing the same lake in four different colors — spring, summer, autumn, and winter

First I picked the four-seasons lake. The same lake, but dressed differently each season.

Cheongho called out first.

"Wow, Juho, look at those petals! They're so pretty. My favorite pink!"

It was spring. Pink petals drifted gently by the lakeside.

Then the screen flipped — summer.

Juho said "Wow, the lush forest looks amazing" and everything turned deep green.

In autumn, Cheongho "Wow, the whole world is so colorful!" and clapped her hands.

Red and yellow leaves reflected in the lake, coloring the water too.

Last came winter. "The whole world is pure white!"

Juho pointed again. "Wow, Cheongho, look at that tree. Snow piled up on the branches!"

The same spot, but spring, summer, autumn, and winter looked so different.

Hehe, the lake wears the four seasons too!

From the sky, the mountaintops were islands!

Didi watching Juho and Cheongho fly over the lake on a paraglider in the AR screen

The second activity was flying through the sky.

Cheongho pointed and said, "Wow, that's so cool~ Look at that island~ It's so beautiful!"

A green island was floating right in the middle of the lake.

Oh! That must have been the floating mountain Banggu talked about!

Juho cheered too. "Wow~ this is so fun~ The lake is gorgeous! We're actually flying, whoa!"

In the screen, Juho and Cheongho were drifting through the sky above the lake on a paraglider.

The blue lake and green island spread out below their feet.

Whoa! I'm just watching the screen, but I feel like I've turned into a bird!

Splash! Water skiing is so refreshing

Didi watching Cheongho and Juho water skiing and kicking up a huge spray

Now for the last activity.

Cheongho said "Let's go do the last activity!" — and it was water skiing!

In the screen, Juho jumped into the water saying "Playing in the lake feels so cool!"

Cheongho shouted "Juho, hold on tight!" and they took off — a huge spray flew up.

Juho was thrilled. "Cheongho~ one more time, this is so much fun!"

I raised both arms and cheered along. Woohoo!

But then I noticed — Juho and Cheongho were both wearing the same thing.

An orange vest.

Before getting in the water — life jacket first

Didi and Ppuri carefully checking and fastening the straps on an orange life jacket

"Banggu, what's that orange vest?"

Then Ppuri, with her little sprout hair, hopped over to explain.

"That's a life jacket. You have to wear it whenever you go in the water."

When you wear a life jacket, your body floats up, so even if your feet suddenly can't touch the bottom, you won't sink.

I also learned you can't just drape it over yourself — you have to fasten the straps snugly against your body.

If it's too loose, it can slip off underwater.

I practiced fastening the straps together with Ppuri.

When it fits just right, it feels so secure!

Wake your body up — don't skip the warm-up

Didi and Banggu stretching their arms and legs by the water's edge

The moment Banggu saw the water, he was about to jump straight in with a splash.

"Banggu, wait! You can't just dive in like that."

Water is colder than you think, and if you jump in while your body is still warm, your legs can suddenly seize up.

That's why you warm up before getting in.

Swing your arms in circles, stretch your legs, rotate your ankles.

Then gently pour a little water on your hands and feet so your body gets used to the cold.

Banggu followed along and swung his arms in circles too.

If you wake your body up like this, you'll be able to play in the water much more safely.

No deep water — stay close to a grown-up

Didi holding an adult's hand in the shallow water while Ppuri points toward the deep area in the distance

There's one more really important thing about water play.

Never go into deep water.

Water can look shallow from the surface, but just one more step can make it suddenly much deeper.

That's why you should only play in shallow water where your feet can touch the bottom — and only where a grown-up can see you.

Going into the water alone is dangerous no matter how well you can swim.

Juho and Cheongho could have so much fun because a grown-up was watching over them the whole time.

Ah-ha, that's the secret to having real fun!

The secret of the floating mountain — and our promise

Didi pointing at a mountaintop island reflected in the lake, realizing the secret of the floating mountain

After playing to our heart's content, I got curious about that floating mountain again.

Juho smiled and explained.

"This lake is a huge man-made lake, so water rose up over what used to be mountains."

Only the tallest mountaintops stayed above the water — and they looked like floating islands.

The rocks didn't really float. The water rose, and they became islands.

Haha, mystery solved!

And I made a promise to Juho and Cheongho.

When I go to a real river next time, I'll make sure to follow everything I learned today.

Four promises before you play in the water

Didi holding a life jacket and holding up four fingers to make her water safety promises

Rivers and lakes are really cool and fun.

But water is hard to undo if something goes wrong — so there are things to remember before you play.

Wear your life jacket — snug and secure.

Warm up before getting in the water.

Never go into deep water.

And always go with a grown-up.

Follow these four rules, and water play will be even more exciting and safe.

Next time I go to a real river, I'm grabbing my life jacket first.

Banggu, let's both wear one. Hehe!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What should you bring when playing in a river or lake?

When entering the water, the very first thing is to put on a life jacket that fits your body snugly. If the straps are loose, it can slip off underwater, so make sure everything is fastened properly. Before getting in, stretch your arms and legs to warm up, and gently pour water on your hands and feet to help your body adjust to the cold. And always play with an adult, only in shallow water where your feet can touch the bottom.

Q. Why should you never go into deep water?

Rivers and lakes can look shallow from the surface, but just one more step often makes them much deeper. Also, if your body is warm and you suddenly enter cold water, your legs can cramp. That's why you should only play in shallow water where your feet can touch the bottom, and only where a grown-up can watch you. Going in alone is dangerous even if you're a good swimmer — always go with an adult.

Q. Can kids do activities like paragliding or water skiing?

Paragliding and water skiing are super fun, but you must do them with a professional instructor and with proper safety equipment like a life jacket. It's dangerous for a child to do them alone or enter the water without an adult. At home, you can enjoy the wonder of water safely by looking up lake scenery on a map or photographing local nature spots.
